There are many Objectives of the Autonomous Snowplow Competition including:

  1. ★     Encourage

By encouraging the use of math and science to solve every day life’s problems, the competition helps students,
young and old, see the value of these skills, and how they can be applied to practical engineering solutions.

  1. ★     Advance

By selecting a sufficiently difficult and challenging real-world problem, the competition seeks to advance the
state of the art in several areas of vehicle navigation and control.

  2. ★     Promote

By demonstrating the uses of navigation-based technologies in real-world applications, the competition provides
a means of promoting the capabilities and increasing the awareness of the ION and its membership

  1. ★     Outreach

Provide outreach to the general public community of the ION organization and its contributions to our society.

  1. ★     Coordinate, Cooperate, Collaborate

With the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 and 2021, the objectives have been expanded to encourage schools to

work together towards a common goal while keeping their distance, allowing team members to continue
their experience of technology development even while potentially being isolated from others.

The purpose of this competition is to challenge university and college students, as well as the public, to design, build,
and operate a fully autonomous snowplow for the purpose of removing snow from a designated path.

The goal of this competition is in part to encourage students and individuals to utilize the state of the art in navigation
and control technologies to rapidly, accurately, and safely clear a path of snow, without human interaction.
